This 3-month-old leopard cub that I photographed in Masai Mara Kenya was taking solace under his mama's belly. His mom, Kaboso, was looking for a new den location to keep him safe. Leopard cubs face many dangers – lions, hyenas, buffalo, birds of prey, baboons, and even crocodiles (since leopards often live in the trees near water), so the moms will often change the location of the den to keep cubs safe. It's a dangerous time as the cubs are completely defenseless in the open.
Mom would walk in the open and the cub would get brave and follow. At this point, the cub was too scared of the vehicles that were there to take pictures and to see this precious little one and he didn’t follow as mom walked through, so she returned to comfort the cub and they stayed in the shade for a while until the cub could gather courage.
It was incredibly sweet to see the cub with his mama taking such good care of him. They eventually crossed the river to the other side of the ravine to get away from a troop of baboons that had come into the area.
