A graceful orca and her calf can be a great inspiration and writing companion. Whether you're looking for a journal to record your personal thoughts, dreams, or a place to write down important information, these dignified creatures can accompany you on your journey.
Looking at this image I’m instantly brought back: the ocean, the mountains, and orca whales. Such an amazing feeling to smell the saltwater while riding in a boat scouring the sea for its varied mammals. The waters in the San Juan islands have both transient and resident orcas as well as humpback whales.
And when the boat captain finds the whales, the adrenaline and excitement course through your veins to your heart—literally and figuratively!
In this image, I captured a mom with her baby coming up for a spy hop. Orcas travel in family pods and each pod makes distinctive sounds (called dialects) that can be detected by other members at a long distance.
The researchers in and around the San Juan islands know the different pods and their members. They distinguish the whales by the size, shape, nicks and scars on their dorsal fins and also the patch behind their dorsal fin.
